Two armed thieves stole eight French artist Matisse engravings and at least five works by Brazilian painter Cândido Portinari from Biblioteca Mário de Andrade in São Paulo. The robbery happened on Sunday at 10:00 local time. The men entered and left through the main entrance, escaping on foot towards a nearby metro station. They held up a security guard and an elderly couple visiting the library before taking the artworks. The stolen pieces were part of a joint exhibition with the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art called "From Book to Museum," which was concluding its run. Biblioteca Mário de Andrade is Brazil's second-largest library and has facial recognition cameras. São Paulo's mayor said the suspects have been identified but remain at large. According to Folha de São Paulo newspaper, one of the stolen items is a collage Matisse created for his limited-edition art book "Jazz." Matisse is considered a leading 20th-century artist, and experts say the value of the stolen art is "incalculable." Alongside the Matisse works, the thieves took at least five engravings by Portinari. These were made for a special edition of the novel "Menino de Engenho" by José Lins do Rego. Portinari is a key figure in Brazilian Modernism, known for paintings of rural workers and labourers. This theft comes just weeks after a major jewelry heist at the Louvre in Paris shocked the art world.
