The Hebbal flyover in Bengaluru is set to get a new traffic loop by the end of December. This loop will serve vehicles coming from Yelahanka, Jakkur, and Sahakarnagar. It aims to separate traffic from the airport expressway, local roads, and Outer Ring Road (ORR) into distinct lanes. Right now, traffic police stop local and airport expressway vehicles alternatively to manage flyover flow. This causes delays. Pradeep B.U., Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic, North East Subdivision), said, "Once the new loop becomes operational, all streams of traffic will be separated and this manual signal will be eliminated, allowing non-stop flow of traffic." The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is in charge of building the loop. Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao told the BDA to complete the work within two weeks. The BDA has installed steel girders and is about to begin concreting. H.R. Shantarajanna, Member (Engineering), BDA, said the concrete needs 28 days to cure, so the loop will be ready by December end. However, the new loop narrows from 7.5 metres to 6 metres near the flyover, which may cause a bottleneck. Dr. Shantarajanna explained they avoided widening the old flyover to keep traffic moving during construction. Pradeep said, "Given the traffic flow would be non-stop and seamless, this narrowing of the loop would not pose a big problem." Currently, traffic jams near the Hebbal flyover have shifted to Mehkri Circle, stretching up to Baptist Hospital after the new ORR lane was added. Adding the new loop could push these jams back to the Hebbal flyover, losing travel time saved there. The Bengaluru Traffic Police want to widen the service road at Mehkri Circle for a direct left turn to Jayamahal Road. This needs Defence land acquisition, which the BDA is working on. The new loop is expected to make travel smoother and reduce congestion by separating traffic streams effectively.
