Jakarta Office Fire Kills 22 After Battery Explosion at Drone Company Building
December 9, 2025
A deadly fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon in a seven-storey office building in Jakarta, killing at least 22 people, police have confirmed.
City police chief Susatyo Purnomo Condro said the fire started after a battery exploded on the first floor, where some workers were having lunch. The blaze spread quickly, filling upper floors with thick smoke.
Most victims were women, including a pregnant woman. Officials suspect many died from smoke inhalation rather than burns. The building houses a company that makes drones and offers industrial drone services like surveying, mapping, inspection, and agriculture.
Firefighters deployed 28 engines and around 100 personnel to battle the flames. Dramatic scenes showed trapped employees rescued with aerial ladders.
The fire has been put out, but rescue teams continue searching the challenging upper floors, especially the sixth floor. Police are still gathering information and focusing on identifying the victims.
Susatyo told the Associated Press, "We are still collecting data. But for now, we are focusing on identifying the victims who have been found."
