No Direct Proof of Deaths Solely Due to Air Pollution, Says Health Ministry
December 10, 2025
On December 9, 2025, the Union Health Ministry informed Rajya Sabha that there is no conclusive data proving deaths or diseases happen solely because of air pollution. Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav said this in a written reply. He explained that air pollution acts as one of several triggering factors for respiratory problems. "Health effects of air pollution are a synergistic manifestation of factors which include food habits, occupational habits, socio-economic status, medical history, immunity, heredity, etc. of the individuals," Mr. Jadhav stated. The government is actively working to reduce pollution through multiple programs. These include the National Programme for Climate Change and Human Health (NPCCHH), the State Action Plan on climate change and health, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) which provides clean cooking fuel LPG to women and children, the Swachh Bharat Mission, and the National Clean Air Programme started in 2019. These initiatives form a national strategy to lower air pollution across India.
