CPJ Urges PM Modi to Free Jailed Journalists Ahead of Human Rights Day
December 10, 2025
Ahead of International Human Rights Day on December 10, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The group highlighted the issue of journalists jailed in India. CPJ warned that "continued detention and harassment of journalists risks eroding India’s reputation as the world’s largest democracy and a leading voice of the Global South." It urged the government to free all imprisoned journalists so they can be with their families and work without fear. According to CPJ data, India currently holds two journalists in prison under security, anti-terror, and state criminal charges. One is Rupesh Kumar Singh from Jharkhand, who has been jailed for over three years at Patna’s Adarsh Central Jail. Singh’s family says he suffers from poor food, limited medical care despite high cholesterol, long cell confinement, and restricted access to basic facilities. CPJ also noted the jailed journalist count dropped from a high of seven between 2021 and 2023. Still, at least 15 journalists face investigation under the anti-terror Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) since 2014. The group reminded the government that India is a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which requires upholding human rights. It also pointed out that India's Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a). CPJ quoted Prime Minister Modi saying, "democracy is in our DNA" and urged him to protect the values of press freedom and safe reporting.
