Supreme Court Continues Bail Hearings for 2020 Delhi Riots Accused Including Sharjeel Imam
December 10, 2025
The Supreme Court is set to continue hearing bail pleas today (December 10, 2025) for Sharjeel Imam and others accused in the 2020 Delhi riots case. On Tuesday, the accused argued that delivering an "unpalatable" speech cannot alone trigger the strict Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Senior advocate Siddhartha Dave, representing Sharjeel Imam, highlighted the long incarceration period and stressed that Imam is not accused of direct involvement in the violence.
The court is also considering bail pleas of activists Umar Khalid, Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa-ur-Rehman, Mohd. Saleem Khan, and Shadab Ahmed. All face charges of conspiring to cause unrest under the UAPA.
Additional Solicitor-General S.V. Raju, representing the Delhi Police, is expected to give his final arguments today. He noted that several claims made by the accused were factually incorrect and promised to clarify these points before the court.
The bench continues to hear arguments vital to the fate of those charged in these high-profile cases.
