On Wednesday, members of the Panchamasali reservation agitation committee staged a strong protest in front of Suvarna Vidhana Soudha seeking recategorisation of their community. Activists marched from Gandhi Bhavan, holding placards demanding 2A reservation benefits, which the State government has not granted. Several leaders, including Basava Jaya Mrityunjaya Swami of Panchamasali Peeth, were taken into police custody during the protest. The group wore black badges and bands in a silent protest. They blocked Rani Channamma Circle for nearly 30 minutes and held a dharna at Sangolli Rayanna Circle for another half-hour. A heated argument broke out between protestors and police before the detentions. When police arrested the seer, some raised slogans against the action. MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal led the procession but was not detained as he moved ahead of the crowd; he then traveled to the Vidhana Soudha to attend the session. Mr. Yatnal criticized the government, saying, "Last year, they ordered a lathi charge on the protestors. We want to observe December 10 as the day of atrocities on Panchamasalis. The Chief Minister and others should remember that no government that uses force against its citizens will survive." He also accused leaders of prioritizing Tipu Jayanti celebrations over justice for the Panchamasali community. Former Minister C.C. Patil expressed strong support, declaring, "We will fight until we get a reservation. Some public representatives are not involved in the agitation. But that is ok. The people are with us." He added that this issue could influence future elections.
