Kerala Nurse Sentenced to 7 Years for Rape in Scotland After Extradition
December 11, 2025
A 47-year-old nurse from Kerala, Naijil Paul, was sentenced to seven years and nine months in prison in Scotland. He pleaded guilty to raping one vulnerable colleague and sexually assaulting two other women. These crimes happened over seven years ago when he managed a care home in North Lanarkshire.
Paul was charged in 2018 but fled to Kochi, India, just before his trial in December 2019. After being arrested in February 2025 and extradited to Scotland in June, he pleaded guilty in October 2025. On December 8, 2025, the High Court in Glasgow sentenced him.
Justice Lord Renucci said, “In addition to the serious and predatory nature of your offending, notwithstanding the fact you pled guilty, the version of events given by you bears little resemblance to what you have admitted to.”
The court heard Paul blamed victims to a large extent. A pre-sentencing report highlighted this. Paul even claimed he thought he was doing one woman a favour. The judge said, “The degree of victim-blaming that he has embarked upon does cause me some concern. Although he is assessed at medium risk [of re-offending], that very much underestimates his level of risk.”
During the hearing, details emerged that Paul ordered the rape victim to "do what I want" or face losing her job. The victim, then 26, had returned to work from sick leave and told a senior colleague that her debt was pushing her to come back. A week later, Paul threatened her job and forced sexual acts to keep it.
Paul also tried to kiss a 19-year-old care assistant after touching her hips and inappropriately touched another 21-year-old care assistant. To the latter, he said, "I know you want it. I can tell by your body language."
His sentence was slightly reduced from eight years because he pleaded guilty. Paul will be supervised for two years after release and will be on the sex offenders list for life. He is banned from contacting any victims.
Paul, a British national of Indian heritage, fled saying his father was ill before his December 2019 trial. He was arrested in Kochi in February 2025 and extradited from Delhi to Scotland in June 2025.
