December 11, 2025
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has set up a high-level committee to resolve the Mahanadi River water dispute with Chhattisgarh. The committee will be led by Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vaardhan Singh Deo. The Odisha Chief Minister’s Office said the committee will provide policy guidance on technical and administrative actions related to the ongoing dispute. The Mahanadi River issue is sensitive and complex, requiring careful attention.
The committee includes key ministers and MLAs: Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, Industries Minister Sampad Chandra Swain, Government Chief Whip Saroj Kumar Pradhan, and MLAs Niranjan Pujari, Jaynarayan Mishra, and Sophia Firdaus.
Earlier, Odisha and Chhattisgarh agreed to work together for a peaceful and mutual solution. Technical teams from both states, led by their Engineer-in-Chiefs, will meet weekly to solve critical issues. According to committee MLAs, political talks solve interstate disputes faster than courts or tribunals.
The Mahanadi River, known as Odisha’s lifeline, begins in Chhattisgarh’s Amarkantak hills and flows 851 km, with 494 km passing through Odisha before joining the Bay of Bengal.
