Rising Violence in Marseille Drug Gangs Dragging Children Into Deadly Chaos
December 11, 2025
Marseille, France, is facing a wave of brutal violence linked to drug gangs. Children are increasingly victims and even participants. Adel, a 15-year-old, was found dead with a bullet in his head, his body burned on a beach. This shocking event is one of many in the growing drug wars fueled by social media and gangs using youths for dirty work.
A former gang member, nicknamed The Immortal, said, "It's chaos now... nobody respects anything these days." The French Ministry of Justice reports the number of teenagers in drug trade has risen four times in eight years.
Local lawyer and community organizers describe a state of fear gripping Marseille. "The drug traffickers are dominant," said an anonymous lawyer who now avoids representing gang violence victims. Activist Mohamed Benmeddour explained, "Kids aged 13 or 14 come as lookouts or dealers. They are no longer afraid of killing or being killed."
The violence peaked after Mehdi Kessaci, a 20-year-old trainee policeman, was killed last month. His brother Ahmed, an anti-gang activist, said, "The struggle of my life is going to be this fight against guilt."
Police have launched "bombardment" raids, closing over 40 drug spots and arresting many, including youngsters forced into gangs. Marseille's chief prosecutor, Nicolas Bessone, warned, "Traffickers enslave these little soldiers. They torture them if they steal €20 to buy a sandwich."
Social media is now used to recruit youths and sell drugs openly, with ads promising pay for lookouts and drug carriers. Some politicians demand emergency measures and tougher immigration laws. MP Franck Alissio of the far-right National Rally said, "Authority must be restored. We need more power for police and judiciary."
Local critics argue this view unfairly blames immigrants and ignores social causes. Writer Philippe Pujol, under police protection, comments, "This terror is nursing symptoms of a suffering society. These kids still have dreams and don’t want violence."
Marseille’s drug-war chaos reveals a city caught in a deadly spiral, where children’s innocence is shattered, and the fight for control turns ever more violent and desperate.
