December 11, 2025
On December 11, 2025, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant led the Supreme Court in a ceremonial welcome for Sri Lanka’s Chief Justice, Preethi Padman Surasena. Justice Surasena, who became the 49th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka on July 27, 2025, visited India with nine top judges. A special court sitting featured Justice Surasena alongside CJI Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi. CJI Kant expressed pride in hosting the delegation, saying, "We hope that your visit to India has been quite meaningful and very constructive in terms of the dialogue exchanges. Our countries have close emotional bonds in terms of culture and sentiments." Justice Surasena responded warmly, calling the visit "indeed a great pleasure," and noted the long history of ties, stating, "India is our closest neighbour, the bond between the two countries was persistent from the time of rulers, kings." He referred to Emperor Ashoka's journey from Bengal to Sri Lanka and ancient mentions in the Ramayana as evidence of over 2,500 years of shared heritage. The Sri Lankan visitors also took part in the Supreme Court Bar Association's Constitution Day on November 26. Attorney General R. Venkataramani emphasized the shared "common spiritual and cultural heritage," while Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said, "We share the same civilisation and culture." The delegation recently spent three days at the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal, guided by Justice Aniruddha Bose. The CJI noted their upcoming visit to the Delhi High Court on December 13. Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh honored the work of Sri Lankan jurist C.G. Weeramantry, and Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association President Vipin Nair called the meeting a "significant moment" for two democratic Chief Justices standing together. This visit highlights the strong bond between the two neighbouring countries’ legal systems and cultures.
