Karnataka Tables Greater Bengaluru Governance Amendments and Social Boycott Prevention Bill 2025
December 11, 2025
On Thursday, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly heard two important bills. Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa presented The Greater Bengaluru Governance (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025, on behalf of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. This bill proposes six amendments to the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024. Key among these is the inclusion of all elected members of Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assembly whose constituencies fall within the Greater Bengaluru Authority. Also included are Rajya Sabha members and State Legislative Council members who represent areas within the authority. The amendments extend to elected members from local authorities, graduate and teacher constituencies, and Rajya Sabha members registered as voters in the area.
In addition, the Social Welfare Minister introduced The Karnataka Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Bill, 2025. This bill aims to ban any act of social boycott within communities. It states, "any person who imposes or causes to impose any social boycott on any member of his community" would face imprisonment up to three years, a fine up to ₹1 lakh, or both. The bill also calls for the appointment of Social Boycott Prohibition Officers and promises compensation for victims.
These bills mark important legal steps to improve governance and social justice in Karnataka.
