On December 11, 2025, the Supreme Court formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the unnatural death of Scheduled Caste youth, Nilesh Adivasi, in Madhya Pradesh. The case involves conflicting statements from his widow and brother about who caused the tragedy. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi ordered the state's Director General of Police to create a three-member SIT with direct-recruit IPS officers. The SIT must include a Madhya Pradesh cadre officer with no ties to the state, a young officer also with no roots in the state, and a woman officer. The widow claims her husband took his life due to “torture and harassment meted out to him by a former Home Minister of the State and his associates” and seeks a CBI probe. Meanwhile, the brother blamed 'Govind Singh Rajput' and others for Nilesh's death. The court highlighted the contradictory family versions and said the case deserves a “dispassionate, fair, independent and impartial investigation.” It noted that local police might not complete the probe properly, and delays could harm the victim’s family by risking evidence loss or witness influence. The court declined a CBI investigation citing the agency’s workload, and instead used its constitutional power under Article 142 to form the SIT. The investigation must finish within a month, the court directed.
