Reddit Challenges Australia’s Ban on Under-16 Social Media Use in High Court
December 12, 2025
Reddit has launched a legal challenge in Australia's High Court against a new law banning social media accounts for users under 16. The law, which started this Wednesday, requires 10 social media platforms to block Australians younger than 16 from using their services. The government and campaigners say the ban protects kids from harmful content and risky algorithms.
Reddit is following the law but argues it harms privacy rights and political freedom. This is the second challenge to the ban; two teenagers from New South Wales have also asked the High Court to review the rule, claiming it restricts communication on political matters. One teen, Macey Newland, said, "Democracy doesn't start at 16 as this law says it will."
Australia's Communications Minister Anika Wells said the government will not be intimidated by tech firms. "We will not be intimidated by big tech. On behalf of Australian parents, we will stand firm," she told parliament.
Many experts and kids say the ban may be ineffective. They worry kids will find ways to bypass age checks or use less safe sites. Some children, including those from LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, or rural communities, say the ban limits their social connections and learning about online safety.
The ban has gained support from parents and public figures like Oprah and Prince Harry and Meghan, who called the ban "bold" but hoped it was "only the start" of holding tech companies accountable.
Australia’s law is the world's strictest, with no parental opt-out and set at a higher age limit of 16. Reddit criticized the law for forcing "intrusive and potentially insecure verification processes on adults as well as minors" and creating inconsistent rules across platforms. It said, "There are more targeted, privacy-preserving measures to protect young people online without resorting to blanket bans."
Reddit stressed this challenge is not about keeping young users or avoiding the law. It pointed out most Reddit users are adults and it does not target children under 18 with advertising.
The other platforms affected include Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.
