30 Lakh Voters in West Bengal Fail to Link to 2002 List Ahead of 2026 Polls
December 12, 2025
West Bengal's electoral office revealed on December 11, 2025, that nearly 30 lakh electors could not link themselves to the 2002 voters’ list. This is about 4% of the state's 7.6 crore voters as of October 27, 2025. These voters will likely be called for hearings after the draft electoral roll is published. So far, 29.3 lakh voters linked to their own names in 2002, while 38.4 lakh linked to their parents or grandparents. However, these family linkages will be carefully checked for accuracy.
Officials also flagged over 58 lakh 'uncollectable' forms. These include 24.2 lakh dead voters, 2 lakh voters who have shifted, and 1.4 lakh duplicates. Artificial intelligence tools are being used to spot duplicates and mismatches in voter data.
West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal said reports on high-rise buildings, large housing societies, and slums with over 250 houses or 500 voters are being collected. These areas may get new polling booths. The Election Commission has asked for the polling booth rearrangement plan by December 31, with completion targeted for February 7, 2026.
State election officials also met law enforcement officers on December 11 to plan security for the upcoming 2026 legislative elections. They reviewed security preparations, agency cooperation, and data from past elections to ensure smooth polls.
