170 Karnataka Government Schools Lack Toilets; 61 Have No Drinking Water
December 12, 2025
Some Karnataka government schools face a serious lack of basic infrastructure. Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa said 170 schools have no toilets. Another 61 schools do not have drinking water facilities. This came up during a question by MLC N. Ravikumar about school infrastructure.
Karnataka has 46,460 government schools with 40,74,525 students enrolled for 2025-26. Most schools have toilets, but 701 lack separate toilets for girls and 2,039 have no separate toilets for boys. Students must share common toilets.
The problem affects Bengaluru too. A headmaster in Laggere said his school with 307 students and 152 girls has only five toilets and no separate facilities for girls. Requests to build more toilets remain unfulfilled, including an NGO proposal.
Children with Special Needs (CwSN) face added troubles. In 39,478 schools, no separate toilets exist for these students. Child rights activist Nagasimha Rao said, "The government has a misconception about Person with Disabilities (PwD). Basic facilities for all 21 types of PwD should be available. Teachers also lack training to teach CwSN children. These children are falling behind. Schools must include their needs in plans."
The minister highlighted progress in recent years: 9,878 rooms repaired and 7,650 toilets built. For 2025-26, a ₹360 crore grant is allocated for classrooms, ₹100 crore for repairs, and ₹90 crore for toilet construction. Approval for the action plan is underway.
