Kannur's local body elections on Thursday were marked by serious allegations of violence, bogus voting, and intimidation. Leaders from the United Democratic Front (UDF), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) of orchestrating systematic disruption across the district. District Congress Committee president Martin George said large-scale bogus voting and attacks happened in CPI(M) strongholds like Anthoor, Malapattam, Kuttur, Mathamangalam, and others. He claimed UDF booth agents were threatened and expelled early in the day. Women candidates were among those assaulted. George urged the State Election Commission to act against officials who supported these irregularities. Violence was reported from multiple areas: Chengalayi, Cheruthazaham, Kokkad, Kottiyoor, Mankunnu, Kadirur, and more. For example, at Chengalayi ward 1, two UDF polling agents were assaulted and denied passes. In Cheruthazham ward 16, a UDF booth agent was beaten inside a school booth. Kadirur’s UDF candidate K. Lathika was attacked inside a booth, had her voter list snatched, and was hospitalized. In Malur, UDF candidate Amala and Youth Congress leader Rahul Mekkilery were allegedly assaulted after questioning bogus voting. At Muzhakkunnu, district panchayat candidate Sajitha Mohan and others were attacked while preventing impersonation, prompting police lathicharge. More attacks happened in Anthoor, including beatings of Congress constituency president Prajosh. Several injured were admitted to hospitals in Payyannur, Thalassery, and Kannur. Kottiyoor’s UDF worker K. Aslam was beaten on voting day and hospitalized. IUML leaders Abdul Kareem Cheleri and K.T. Sahadulla accused CPI(M) of fearing democratic resistance, citing voter deletions, forced open voting, and mass intimidation. BJP Kannur South president Biju Elakkuzhi claimed over 150 forced open votes in some booths and demanded an Election Commission probe, alleging CPI(M) relied on impersonation and coercion. Other incidents included vandalism of a BJP booth convenor's scooter and allegations of bogus voting by UDF candidate N Abdul Rahman at Panoth ward. CPI(M) district secretary K.K. Ragesh dismissed the accusations as UDF's attempt to hide its weakness. He said UDF lacked candidates in several wards and faced police cases for forged nominations. He added that LDF workers were also attacked in places like Taliparamba and Pariyaram. Ragesh said, "Saturday’s result would deliver another setback to the UDF."
