The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has launched the Translational AI for Networked Universal Healthcare (TANUH) Foundation. TANUH is a new dedicated AI Centre of Excellence in Healthcare aimed at advancing AI-based healthcare solutions across India. It supports the government’s goal to ‘Make AI in India and Make AI Work for India’. The Ministry of Education has created four AI Centres of Excellence at top Indian institutions, including IISc. TANUH is a Section 8 non-profit company focusing on AI tools for managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like oral cancer, breast cancer, retinal issues, diabetes, and mental health. The centre acts as a hub for clinicians, data scientists, and AI experts. Nine IISc faculty members lead research across digital health, machine learning, and public health fields. The core TANUH team includes executives, engineers, and researchers with strong industry experience. Their mission is to bring AI health technologies from labs to real communities. TANUH designs tools for early disease detection, risk prediction, and personalized care to help frontline workers and hospitals. These tools follow strict AI ethics and are tested with top institutions such as AIIMS, New Delhi. Professor G. Rangarajan, IISc Director and Chair of TANUH, said, "We are excited to establish TANUH, an AI Centre of Excellence in Healthcare. This multidisciplinary centre will deliver scalable AI solutions for NCDs like oral and breast cancer, exemplified by our award-winning Aarogya Aarohan app. TANUH aligns well with the ‘Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India’ vision, and seeks to enable accessible healthcare across the country." TANUH has already launched Aarogya Aarohan, an app for oral cancer screening. This app was developed alongside AIIMS, ARTPARK, Biocon Foundation, BITS Pilani (Goa), KLE Society’s Institute of Dental Sciences, Triveous, and others. The Oral Cancer Task Force guided the project. This move marks a big step to use AI for fighting major health issues in India effectively and at scale.
