Three people were arrested on December 11, 2025, in Dharmapuri after a woman died during an illegal abortion at home. K. Ramya, 26, from Poochur near Eriyur, was pregnant again and the mother of two daughters. Her husband, Kannan, 35, first told relatives she died from a fall down the stairs on December 1. But the family grew suspicious. Eriyur police began investigating and found that Kannan, with help from nurse Suganya, 35, of Omalur, and mediator Vanitha, 35, had illegally done a scan to find out the baby's gender. The scan showed the foetus was female. Kannan then decided to abort the pregnancy. On December 1, Suganya and Vanitha allegedly assisted Kannan in trying to abort Ramya at home. Ramya suffered heavy bleeding and was rushed to the hospital but died on the way. The police arrested Kannan, Suganya, and Vanitha and sent them to prison. The case highlights illegal gender determination and unsafe abortion practices in the area.
