Supreme Court dismisses petition on earthquake risk for 75% of India’s population
December 12, 2025
On December 12, 2025, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition about earthquake risks affecting 75% of India's population. The petitioner asked the court to direct authorities to reduce earthquake damage. A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta questioned the petitioner's demand. "So we should relocate everyone to the moon or where?" the Bench asked. The petitioner mentioned a recent big earthquake in Japan. The Bench responded, "First we have to bring volcanoes into this country then we can compare it with Japan." The Bench stated that earthquake damage prevention is a government matter and said, "That is for the government to take care (of); this court cannot do it. Dismissed." When the petitioner cited media reports, the Bench said, "These are newspaper reports. We are not bothered about them." The petition was thus rejected as a policy matter reserved for the government.
