India Voices Concern Over Damage to Preah Vihear Temple Amid Cambodia-Thailand Border Clash
December 12, 2025
India on Friday, December 12, 2025, expressed concern over damage caused to the Preah Vihear temple complex located in the disputed border region between Cambodia and Thailand. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called the damage "unfortunate" and urged both sides to "return to dialogue." "The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Preah Vihear temple is a shared cultural heritage of humanity. India has been closely involved in its preservation. We sincerely hope that all measures will be taken to fully safeguard the site and related conservation facilities," Mr. Jaiswal said.
The Preah Vihear temple complex, which dates back to the 11th century, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been working on conserving and restoring ancient Khmer temples in Cambodia since 1986. India's restoration efforts include famous sites such as Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm, with the third phase currently underway.
The border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand, which started earlier this year, has historical roots from the colonial era, with Thailand claiming lands historically important to Cambodia. The clashes have displaced at least 300,000 people and caused dozens of casualties.
India reaffirmed its call for peace. Mr. Jaiswal stated, "We once again reiterate our appeal to both sides to exercise restraint and to take measures for cessation of hostilities and prevention of further escalation. We urge them to return to the path of dialogue and peace."
