Kozhikode Corporation Sees Lowest Polling at 69.55% Amid Youth Migration
December 13, 2025
The Kozhikode Corporation recorded the lowest polling rate in the district at 69.55%, despite a high-profile election. Other local bodies saw over 75% voter turnout. Polling has fallen steadily over years: 74.78% in 2015 and 70.49% in 2020. K. Praveen Kumar, District Congress Committee president, said, "Most youngsters are out of the State either for education or employment as they have no opportunities here. The State government is responsible for it." CPI(M) district secretary M. Mehaboob noted that many young voters studying in Karnataka missed voting due to exams. He added the use of a 2010 voter list also lowered the turnout, as many registered voters have moved away. Mr. Praveen Kumar said the United Democratic Front (UDF) faced "unusual hurdles like discrepancies in the voters’ list and unscientific delimitation of wards." He expressed confidence that UDF would win the Corporation and named Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary P.M. Niyas as the mayoral candidate. Meanwhile, Mr. Mehaboob withheld naming any mayor candidate before results, although outgoing Deputy Mayor C.P. Musafar Ahamed is a favorite among party workers.
