Turkish Car Ferry Hit by Strike at Ukraine's Odesa Port, Fire Breaks Out
December 13, 2025
A large fire broke out on a Turkish car ferry anchored at the Ukrainian port city of Odesa after it was hit in a strike on Friday. The ferry, operated by the company Cenk Denizcilik, was carrying "essential food supplies" when the attack happened shortly after it docked at the Chornomorsk port at 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT).
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky blamed Russia for the strike. Russia has not issued any comment. The attack occurred hours after Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin about a possible limited ceasefire for energy facilities and ports, but Russia has resisted ceasefire calls.
Moscow has threatened to cut "Ukraine off from the sea" in response to Kyiv's attacks on Russian maritime tankers tied to oil exports, a key war funding source.
The company confirmed emergency response actions started immediately, involving the ship's crew, port fire brigade, and tugboats, as the fire broke out in the forward part of the ship. "At this stage, there are no reports of casualties or injuries among the crew," the company said.
Video shared on Zelensky's Telegram shows efforts to put out the large blaze. Zelensky condemned the strike, calling it a targeting of a civilian Turkish ship that "could not have any military meaning."
Turkey's foreign ministry urged for an agreement to ensure "security of shipping and suspending attacks against energy and port infrastructure" to avoid Black Sea escalation. Turkey continues to maintain ties with both Russia and Ukraine since the war began in February 2022 and controls the strategic Bosphorus Strait, essential for Ukrainian grain and Russian oil exports.
