Tamil Nadu Files Review Petition in Supreme Court Against Karnataka’s Mekedatu Dam Project
December 13, 2025
The Tamil Nadu government filed a review petition in the Supreme Court on December 11 against last month's ruling on Karnataka’s Mekedatu dam proposal, said Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan on Friday. Tamil Nadu also submitted a representation to the Central Water Commission on December 9, highlighting the potential negative impact of the dam on the state. "The Tamil Nadu government has been undertaking consistent steps in protecting the welfare of farmers in the Cauvery delta region. The Tamil Nadu government would never allow the Karnataka government’s efforts [with regard to its proposal to construct a dam across the Cauvery at Mekedatu]," said Mr. Duraimurugan. He pointed out that some parts of the recent Supreme Court judgment contradict the court’s own February 16, 2018 ruling. Acting on advice from legal experts and the Chief Minister’s direction, Tamil Nadu moved the review petition. AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami expressed worry over Karnataka setting up a technical team to speed up the Mekedatu project. In a post on X, he criticized the DMK government for its handling of the issue, blaming it for allowing Karnataka’s move. He said, "It had become ‘customary’ for the DMK regime to ‘compromise’ on the State’s rights in respect of the Cauvery dispute." He urged the state to take strong legal action. Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam chief T.T.V. Dhinakaran condemned Karnataka’s move too, warning that if the project succeeds, the Cauvery delta would turn into a “desert.” He called on the DMK government to stop Karnataka’s plans at once.
