Families of 11 Pakistani fishermen, including two teenage boys, arrested by Indian maritime forces, have appealed for their release. The fishermen were caught near Indian waters close to Jakhau on December 10, 2025. Ahmed Brohi, father of one arrested fisherman Ghulam Mustafa, said they live in a poor fishing village called Ibrahim Hyderi near Karachi. “We are all poor people, and we earn our livelihood through fishing. I urge the government to do something because we have already suffered a lot in the past,” Brohi said on December 13. Fatima Majeed, chairperson of the Sindh Fisheries Department, explained the fishermen may have accidentally crossed into Indian waters near Kajar Creek. She noted that these creek areas near Gujarat have unclear borders in the Arabian Sea, causing many fishermen from both countries to face arrests. Majeed added that two of the arrested are children aged 12 and 15. She urged, “I urge the Indian authorities to release the children at least, on humanitarian grounds.” According to the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, the total number of Pakistani fishermen in Indian jails is around 74 after this latest detention. Most are poor fishermen caught in disputed waters near Sir Creek and Kajar Creek. Prisoner exchanges between India and Pakistan happen regularly but have slowed due to ongoing tensions. The families hope diplomatic efforts will secure their release soon.
