UDF Sweeps Kollam Corporation, Ending 25 Years of LDF Rule in 2025 Local Elections
December 13, 2025
The 2025 Kerala local body elections shocked many as the United Democratic Front (UDF) won outright in the Kollam Corporation. This victory ended the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) unbroken 25-year reign. UDF took control by winning 27 seats out of 56 in the council. In comparison, LDF plunged from 39 seats in 2020 to just 16 this time. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) also made big gains, doubling their seats to 12. Two former Mayors from the Communist parties, Honey Benjamin from CPI and V. Rajendrababu from CPI(M), lost their seats, highlighting the strong anti-incumbency wave. The results reflect voters' dissatisfaction with the LDF government on civic issues and mark a major political recovery for UDF ahead of upcoming Assembly elections. The NDA also cemented its position as a key player by securing second place in early counting, making Kollam Corporation’s politics truly tri-polar. Overall, the election results show a major shift in Kollam's political landscape.
