The United Democratic Front (UDF) has made a strong comeback in the Thrissur Corporation, winning 33 out of 56 seats and gaining a clear majority after 10 years. The Congress-led UDF defeated the Left Democratic Front (LDF), which won 11 seats. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) managed to increase its seats from six in 2020 to eight this time. Four Independent candidates also won seats. The UDF had been in opposition for two terms and worked hard this election. Their efforts paid off despite narrowly losing the Kottapuram division in a tie decided by a toss. This election is a big turnaround from the 2020 poll, which ended in a deadlock between UDF and LDF. Expectations were high for the BJP, led by Union Minister Suresh Gopi, after his Lok Sabha win in 2024. However, the much-talked-about “Suresh Gopi effect” did not lead to big gains in Thrissur. The NDA increased seats only slightly and failed to capture the city fully, despite winning some key urban areas. Rajan Pallan, former Opposition leader, said, "The people had been waiting to give a fitting reply to 10 years of corruption, mismanagement and poor governance under the LDF. Issues such as the stray dog menace and what people perceived as a tax onslaught pushed citizens to the brink. This verdict is a clear response to that." The defeat of sitting councillor John Daniel by NDA’s A. V. Krishnamohan in Patturaikkal was a rare setback for the UDF. LDF district secretary K. V. Abdul Khader accepted the need to review after the defeat. He noted, "This defeat calls for a serious and in-depth review. However, the reversal has largely occurred in the city. The LDF has retained its dominance in municipalities, grama panchayats, block panchayats and the district panchayat. Organizational weakness in urban areas was a factor, and the BJP’s advances in the city’s core areas need close examination."
