West Bengal Governor Denied Entry at Salt Lake Stadium Amid Messi Visit Violence
December 13, 2025
West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose was not allowed inside Salt Lake Stadium on December 13, 2025. This happened hours after violence broke out following football legend Lionel Messi's brief public appearance. Fans were angry they could not see Messi clearly due to organisers and VIPs surrounding him. When the Governor arrived, the gates were closed and lights were off. He said, “Its not a case of the key of the gate... remember, all for a nail a kingdom was lost. If any deliberate attempt is done by someone to hide the truth from the constitutional head of the State, they are in a fool’s paradise.” The Governor wanted a first-hand look to send a report to the Centre. Earlier, fans had vandalised parts of the stadium after failing to see Messi properly. Police cleared all spectators and media from the venue. The Governor directed the State government to order a judicial enquiry, arrest the event organiser, and refund fans' ticket money. West Bengal Police arrested Satadru Dutta, the main organiser, and promised compensation. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced an enquiry commission to investigate the mismanagement. The Governor had asked the State government on December 12 for a detailed report on the arrangements for Messi’s Kolkata visit.
