The Israeli military announced it killed senior Hamas commander Raed Saed in a strike on a car in Gaza City on Saturday. Four people died, and at least 25 were injured, according to Gaza health officials. Hamas and Gaza medics have not yet confirmed Saed’s death. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a joint statement: "In response to the activation of a Hamas explosive device that wounded our forces today … we instructed the elimination of the terrorist Raed Saed, head of Hamas’ force buildup." They called Saed “one of the architects” of the deadly October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel that started the war. Earlier on Saturday, Israel reported two reserve soldiers were lightly injured by a bomb during a clearance operation in southern Gaza. An Israeli defense official said Saed was targeted as the head of Hamas’s weapons manufacturing force. Hamas sources say Saed was the group’s armed wing second-in-command and once led Hamas’s Gaza City battalion. The conflict began after Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostages in October. Since then, Israeli offensive operations have killed over 70,700 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to Gaza health officials. A ceasefire started on October 10, allowing many Palestinians to return to Gaza City, and aid deliveries have increased. Despite this, violence continues, with Palestinian health officials saying Israeli strikes have killed at least 386 people post-truce. Israel reports losing three soldiers and hitting many fighters since then.
