ISIS Gunman Kills 3 Americans, Wounds 3 US Troops in Syria Ambush Near Palmyra
December 14, 2025
Two US service members and one American civilian were killed on Saturday in an ambush by an Islamic State gunman in central Syria. Three other US troops were injured, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said. The attack happened near the historic town of Palmyra during a US forces visit. CENTCOM said on X, “Two US service members and one US civilian were killed, and three service members were injured, as a result of an ambush by a lone ISIS gunman in Syria. The gunman was engaged and killed.” This is the first time since former Syrian president Bashar Assad fell a year ago that US forces have suffered casualties in Syria. CENTCOM added that the names of the deceased would be withheld for 24 hours to notify their families. Syrian state media SANA reported that shots were fired at Syrian and American forces, injuring several. The wounded were airlifted to the US-run al-Tanf garrison near the Syria-Iraq-Jordan border. SANA confirmed the attacker was killed but did not share further details. A US defense official told the AP that officials were aware of the incident but had no immediate details. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights mentioned that at least three Syrian security personnel were also wounded and gave a different detail about the attacker. The US has several hundred troops in eastern and central Syria as part of the coalition fighting ISIS. Though ISIS lost territory in 2019, the United Nations estimates 5,000 to 7,000 ISIS fighters remain active in Syria and Iraq through sleeper cells. US troops at places like al-Tanf have been attacked before. In 2019, a bombing in Manbij killed two US service members and two American civilians during a patrol, marking one of the deadliest attacks on US forces in Syria.
