Experts Call for Fair Markets and Ecological Farming to Boost Small Farmers' Livelihoods
December 14, 2025
Experts and agricultural practitioners gathered at a national conference in Rajasthan to call for fair and inclusive markets for small and marginal farmers. The two-day event, "Food systems transformation: From ecological farms to fair markets," was organised by Vaagdhara with support from Germany's Welthungerhilfe and the Centre for World Solidarity. Researchers and policymakers from eight states discussed solutions for climate-driven crop losses, fluctuating income, rising costs, and poor market access. The conference highlighted the need for supportive policies that build resilient food value chains and markets. Vaagdhara secretary Jayesh Joshi stressed, "There is no need for external certification. Farmers can build a direct relationship with the consumers." Water expert Laxman Singh urged protecting traditional wisdom for efficient irrigation. Sapna Narula, director at the National Institute of Agricultural Marketing, pointed out that "gender inequality was a key issue within the food value chain that needed to be addressed." Over 40 farmer-producer organisations and small businesses showcased organic products, showing sustainable farming's economic promise. States represented included Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Uttarakhand. Discussions focused on future trends, market chances, and policy dialogue to strengthen ecological value chains and boost market links for smallholders. Speakers warned the rise of large market players will strongly affect demand for local foods.
