PLA Claims Drone Attack on Assam Rifles Camp in Manipur, 4 Injured
December 14, 2025
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA), a banned insurgent group in Northeast India, has uploaded a video claiming a drone attack on an Assam Rifles (AR) base along the Manipur–Myanmar border. The 6.56-minute video, released on December 11, shows a drone dropping explosives on the AR camp in Tengnoupal district. This attack happened on November 28 and injured four Assam Rifles personnel. Following the attack, the Army stated that terrorists fired on an Assam Rifles patrol party in Tengnoupal in the early hours of November 28. The Army retaliated immediately while prioritizing civilian safety. Additional troops have been deployed to the area.
The PLA is a Meitei insurgent group banned since 1979, operating from Myanmar with a goal to secede Manipur from India. A senior government official said the video aims to regain the group’s presence in the region and spread fear. The PLA also took responsibility in the video for a September 19 ambush in Nambol, where two Assam Rifles personnel were killed. This ambush was the first major attack on central security forces in Manipur after ethnic violence in May 2023. Following that, security forces launched intensive operations and arrested many PLA cadres.
The official described the drone used on November 28 as rudimentary and locally assembled. "The drone appears to be commercially procured, and the ammunition is also not of a high grade. It was low-tech equipment and could not inflict any damage. All four personnel are stable, and they received only shrapnel injuries," the official said.
The PLA also said it had support from other banned groups like NSCN (K-YA) and ULFA (I) and claimed it carried out several attacks on Assam Rifles from September 19 to December 10. Assam Rifles is the main border-guarding and counter-insurgency force along the Myanmar border. Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025.
