Goa Seals Nightclubs Over Safety Norm Violations After Deadly Fire
December 14, 2025
Goa is tightening the noose on nightclubs ahead of Christmas and New Year. After a deadly fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora killed 25 people on December 6, authorities launched intensive inspections. A team from district administration, fire and emergency services, and police is checking all nightclubs in North Goa’s tourism hotspots. "We are inspecting all the nightclubs, checking their licences and permissions. Any club found to be violating the norms is sealed," said government officer Kabir Shirgaonkar, leading the inspection team. The team can immediately seal any club breaking the rules. Already, two big nightclubs—Goya Club and Cafe CO2 Goa in Vagator—have been shut down. Goya Club was built on agricultural land, which is illegal. Cafe CO2 Goa lacked a No Objection Certificate from the Fire and Emergency Services and was not structurally safe. Another club, Diaz Pool Club and Bar in Anjuna, is facing the revocation of its fire safety certificate. A surprise check on December 13 found its fire safety measures inadequate, and the Fire Officer ordered upgrades. With the busiest travel time ahead, Goa’s authorities are serious about preventing another tragedy and ensuring people’s safety in nightclubs.
