A mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, left two students dead and nine others injured. The gunman opened fire around 4 PM local time in a classroom during exams. Brown University, one of the oldest in the US, went into lockdown as police searched for the suspect, who is still at large. Students on parts of the campus were told to shelter in place until police could escort them safely. Rhode Island Hospital officials said most injured are in "critical but stable" condition. No names of victims have been released. Brown University President Christina Paxson said, "This is a day that we hoped never would come to our community. It is deeply devastating for all of us." Police have shared limited information about the male suspect. CCTV showed him walking out after the attack, dressed all in black and possibly wearing a mask. The firearm used has not been found. Deputy Police Chief Tim O'Hara said, "We're utilising every resource possible to find this suspect," with extra armed officers searching the area. The shooting took place in the Barus and Holley building, part of the engineering school, during an economics review session. A professor said the shooter yelled something before opening fire. Students tried to escape or hide in the stadium-style seating. The university cleared the building but did not find the gunman or the weapon. Nearby residents were told to stay inside or avoid the area. Police are escorting people from non-residential buildings to safety. Local restaurants locked their doors as customers and staff waited inside amid flashing police lights. An earlier report of a suspect in custody was disproved as that man was not involved. Student Mari Camara said, "Everyone is the same as me, shocked and terrified that something like this happened." Exams scheduled for Saturday were cancelled, said provost Frank Doyle. US President Donald Trump called the shooting "a terrible thing" and urged prayers for victims. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said, "Our capital city experienced an unthinkable tragedy today. Our hearts are with the people of Providence." Brown University has over 11,000 students and is part of the Ivy League in the northeastern US. This shooting adds to the 389 mass shootings reported in the US so far this year, as tracked by Gun Violence Archive, which reports mass shootings as incidents with four or more victims killed or injured, excluding the attacker.
