West Bengal Inquiry Committee Probes Chaos at Messi's Salt Lake Stadium Event
December 14, 2025
A committee formed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Salt Lake stadium on Sunday, December 14, 2025, to investigate the chaos during Lionel Messi's event held the day before. The panel, led by retired Calcutta High Court judge Justice Ashim Kumar Ray, includes Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and Home Secretary Nandini Chakravorty. Officials said the team will inspect stadium premises, crowd management, and spectator facilities. CCTV footage may also be reviewed. The inquiry aims to assign responsibility for the lapses that caused the disorder and to recommend ways to prevent such incidents at major events.
Saturday's event, which was supposed to be a big sporting spectacle, turned chaotic as thousands of fans protested over poor visibility of Messi, leading to vandalism inside the stadium. Messi left the field early due to the unrest. Police arrested the main organiser for mismanagement and public disorder, and an FIR was filed. Mamata Banerjee apologized to Messi and fans, calling the incident "deeply disturbing," and promised accountability through the inquiry committee.
