Berlin prosecutors have charged Matthias Moosdorf, a member of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland party (AfD), for making a Nazi salute inside the Reichstag. The prosecutors said the incident happened in June 2023 at the east entrance of the Reichstag building. Moosdorf allegedly greeted a party colleague with a heel click and a Hitler salute. Such a salute is illegal in Germany and can result in a prison sentence of up to three years. The Berlin prosecutors confirmed that Moosdorf was aware the gesture was visible to others. Moosdorf, who is 60 years old and represents Zwickau in Saxony, lost his parliamentary immunity in October due to this case. On Monday, he denied making the salute in a post on X. Moosdorf has been part of AfD since 2016. He was the foreign policy spokesperson for the party until May 2023, when he was removed for his friendly stance towards Russia. It was also revealed in October 2024 that he is an honorary professor at a Moscow music academy and a trained cellist.
