The Calcutta High Court will hear three PILs demanding central agency investigations into the violence at Lionel Messi's event at Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata. On December 15, 2025, a Division Bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Pal allowed the PIL filings. Petitioners include BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, and advocates Sabyasachi Chatterjee and Mainak Ghosal. They want the probe shifted from West Bengal Police to agencies like the CBI and SFIO to examine the mismanagement and financial deals behind the event. Thousands of fans were upset on December 13, 2025, as Messi’s appearance was brief and blocked by a crowd of VIPs. This triggered violence and vandalism at the stadium. Police arrested five spectators and Satadru Dutta, the main organiser, who is in 14-day custody. Other organisers and staff are under police summons. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee formed a high-powered enquiry committee led by Justice (Retd.) Ashim Kumar Ray with top officials to investigate the matter. BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari called the arrests of fans "a grave injustice" and criticised ministers Sujit Bose and Aroop Biswas for avoiding action. He demanded their arrest first and doubted the State’s inquiry, urging High Court intervention for transparency. Advocate Sabyasachi Chatterjee questioned the validity of the State committee, citing no gazette notification and said, "Investigating financial dealings related to the event does not fall under State subjects," so the enquiry should not handle financial probes. The High Court hearing continues amid calls for a stay on the FIRs against spectators.
