Vishal V. Sharma, India's Ambassador to UNESCO in Paris, visited the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS). He showed strong support for creating a special space satellite for ocean observation in the region. Sharma also backed expanding training for young researchers in this field. During his visit, he reviewed the SynOps Lab, which provides tsunami early warnings and ocean forecasts for India and nearby ocean regions like the Indian Ocean and Pacific Islands. INCOIS director T. M. Balakrishnan Nair and senior scientists Pattabhi Ramarao and Sudhir Joseph briefed Sharma on the center’s work. Sharma later addressed INCOIS scientists to share his insights. INCOIS acts as India's main agency for tsunami early warning and disaster risk reduction. It is also a Regional Tsunami Service Provider and an International Training Centre under UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). UNESCO’s IOC, set up in 1960, is the only UN body dedicated to ocean science. It promotes global cooperation and uses scientific knowledge to protect lives, livelihoods, and the marine environment. Sharma also helped coordinate the recent visit of Vidar Helgesen, IOC Head at UNESCO and former Norwegian Foreign Minister, to INCOIS. This visit highlights India's key role in international ocean science efforts.
