Indian American Leaders Demand Tougher Gun Laws After Brown University Shooting
December 16, 2025
A deadly shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on December 14 left two people dead and eight injured. Indian American political leaders quickly responded, calling for stronger gun safety laws in the US.
California Representative Ro Khanna called it a "horrific mass shooting" and criticized Congress for failing to pass comprehensive gun safety legislation. He warned, "repeated failures to pass comprehensive gun safety legislation continue to have deadly consequences." Khanna stressed the need for urgent federal action.
Washington Representative Pramila Jayapal echoed the call, saying the frequency of mass shootings should push lawmakers "to move beyond statements and towards concrete reforms." She added the US has seen "too many such attacks in schools and public spaces," highlighting the scale of the problem.
Illinois Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi offered condolences to victims and stressed bipartisan effort to fight gun violence. He said, "Incidents like the Brown University shooting highlight the need for bipartisan efforts to reduce gun-related deaths and injuries." Protecting students and public spaces must remain a priority, he said.
The shooting at Brown came just before the anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School attack, deepening its impact. Authorities continue investigating the attack while leaders and communities mourn and push for urgent steps to stop future violence.
