Hyderabad Man Linked to Australia’s Deadly Bondi Beach Attack on Hanukkah
December 17, 2025
The gunman killed by police in Sunday's attack at Bondi beach, Australia, was from Hyderabad, India, local police said Tuesday. Sajid Akram, 50, studied commerce in Hyderabad before moving to Australia in 1998. His family said they were unaware of any "radical mindset". Akram and his 24-year-old son Naveed, believed to be his accomplice, had traveled to the Philippines last month, but officials are still investigating any terrorist links. The attack, which targeted a Hanukkah event, killed 15 people and wounded 22. It is Australia's worst mass shooting in nearly 30 years and is being treated as a terror act against the Jewish community. Funerals started on Wednesday for victims including Rabbis Eli Schlanger and Yaakov Levitan. Schlanger worked at the Chabad centre near the attack site. Among the other victims were Holocaust survivor Alexander Kleytman, beloved volunteer Marika Pogany, and three people who tried to stop the shooting: Boris and Sofia Gurman and Reuven Morrison. Naveed Akram, hospitalized and in critical condition, may be charged soon. The youngest victim, 10-year-old Matilda, was remembered by her parents with heartfelt words during a memorial at Bondi beach. Police continue investigating the motives and possible connections of the attackers.
