Naveed Akram, the surviving suspect in Sunday’s mass shooting at Bondi Beach, Sydney, has been charged with 59 offences. These include 15 counts of murder and one for committing a terrorist act, New South Wales Police said. His father Sajid Akram, age 50, died in a police shootout during the attack. Fifteen people were killed and many others injured at the event celebrating the first night of Hanukkah. This was Australia’s deadliest shooting since 1996. Navid Akram also faces 40 charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder, plus one for displaying a prohibited terrorist organisation’s symbol publicly. Critically injured during the attack, he faced his first court hearing from his hospital bed. The case is now adjourned until April 2026. Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said they will wait for his medication to wear off before questioning him to ensure fairness. Twenty injured victims remain hospitalized, with one in critical condition. Authorities have declared the attack a terrorist incident. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it appears motivated by Islamic State group ideology. Police found homemade Islamic State flags and improvised explosive devices in the gunmen’s vehicle.
