December 17, 2025
On December 17, 2025, the Supreme Court transferred the R.G. Kar Medical College trainee doctor rape and murder case to the Calcutta High Court. A Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma directed that the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court form an appropriate Division Bench to hear the petitions. The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the case in 2024.
The apex court refused to transfer the case to the Delhi High Court, rejecting a plea by senior advocate Karuna Nundy, who represented doctors from West Bengal and the victim's parents. The Court also ordered its Registry to provide a copy of the CBI status report to the parents of the deceased trainee doctor.
The postgraduate trainee doctor’s body was found on August 9, 2024, inside the seminar room of the Kolkata hospital. The Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, the following day. On January 20, 2025, a Kolkata trial court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment till death.
This horrific crime caused nationwide outrage and sparked long protests in West Bengal. Although a conviction was secured, the Supreme Court continues monitoring related issues, such as the regularization of unauthorised absences of doctors.
After taking suo motu notice, the Supreme Court formed a National Task Force (NTF) on August 20, 2024. The NTF’s job is to create a safety protocol to protect medical professionals in hospitals across India. The tragedy highlighted urgent security concerns for doctors.
