South Africa has accused the United States of using Kenyan nationals without work permits at a centre processing refugee claims. Seven Kenyans were arrested after intelligence showed they entered South Africa on tourist visas and worked illegally at the centre. The US handles refugee applications from white South Africans, mainly Afrikaners, claiming they face persecution. South Africa disagrees with this view. Despite cutting its global refugee intake from 125,000 to 7,500, the US prioritizes Afrikaner refugees. South Africa's department of home affairs said the arrested Kenyans will be deported and banned from entering South Africa for five years. They were denied work visas but broke the law by working on tourist visas. The government said the raid shows a shared commitment with the US to fight illegal immigration and visa abuse. It added that formal diplomatic talks have started with the US and Kenya. No US officials were arrested, and the operation was not at a diplomatic site. The BBC has asked the US State Department for comment.
