Oscars to Stream on YouTube from 2029, Ending ABC TV Run
December 18, 2025
The Academy Awards will leave traditional TV after 2028. Starting 2029, the Oscars ceremony will stream live on YouTube worldwide. This ends a long partnership with US broadcaster ABC, which aired the Oscars since 1976. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a multi-year deal with YouTube from 2029 to 2033.
This is the first time the Oscars will be mainly on a digital platform rather than on broadcast TV. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor said, "the partnership would allow the Oscars to ‘meet global audiences where they already are’ while expanding the show’s reach beyond traditional television viewers."
The Oscars have faced declining ratings in recent years, especially among younger viewers. Though viewership has somewhat stabilized since the pandemic, the show needs to modernize. YouTube will stream the ceremony free with extra features like behind-the-scenes clips and creator-led coverage. The deal may also bring new kinds of ads and sponsorships suited for online viewers.
ABC will still broadcast the Oscars until 2028. This change puts the Oscars in line with many big live events moving to streaming platforms to attract younger and Gen Z audiences. Other events like sports and political debates have also shifted to platforms like YouTube and Twitch.
