On December 18, 2025, the Parliamentary committee studying Bills to remove the prime minister and chief ministers received an extension to submit its report. Joint Parliamentary Committee Chair Aparajita Sarangi moved a resolution in the Lok Sabha for extra time. "up to the first day of the last week of the Budget Session, 2026," she said. The resolution was passed by a voice vote. Usually, the Budget Session ends in early April. The committee had only met once so far, and its term was soon ending. This joint committee is looking into The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, and The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill. Earlier this month, the committee planned to invite political parties that boycotted it. Several opposition parties have stayed away, arguing that the Bills violate the legal principle that a person is "presumed innocent until proven guilty." They also argue the Bills lead to automatic removal of prime ministers, chief ministers, and ministers if they fail to get bail within a month of arrest in serious criminal cases.
