Shavapetti Explores Trauma in Grieving Couple at International Film Festival of Kerala
December 18, 2025
Married couple Alwin and Priya are trapped in a loveless marriage after their daughter dies. Their talks turn into fights with plates thrown on the floor. Each argument ends in cold, unsatisfying intimacy. One day, Priya leaves but returns changed, smiling and trying to please Alwin. She cooks, cleans, and avoids fights. Alwin grows suspicious and asks why she changed. Priya reveals what helped her accept their daughter's death and tells Alwin to do the same to move on. Shavapetti, directed by Rinoshun K, was shown at the 30th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) under Malayalam Cinema Today. The 102-minute film deeply explores trauma through the two characters. Alwin holds tightly to memories of their daughter, while Priya tries to let go to ease her pain. Their different coping ways clash. Saran Sunder plays Alwin as a flawed father who easily loses control. Pooja Sreenan plays Priya, showing a quiet grief that turns eerie as she seems happy in the second half. The story is mostly from Alwin’s unstable view, shown by rough camera work that smooths out when switching to Priya’s perspective. The film keeps a disturbing mood as audiences uncover hidden secrets. Light and darkness symbolize life and survival struggles. This is Rinoshun K's sixth feature and third in Malayalam. His earlier films Five First Dates (2023) and Velicham Thedi (2024) were official IFFK selections too.
