The United Arab Emirates has created the National Media Authority (NMA) to overhaul how media is managed. This new body replaces the UAE Media Council, National Media Office, and Emirates News Agency (WAM). The government aims for one strong media regulator under the Cabinet to improve coordination and national messaging. The NMA will have legal, financial, and administrative independence. It will handle many roles: uniting media policies, setting content standards, licensing media outlets and foreign correspondents, and accrediting media professionals. The Authority will also develop WAM into a leading official news source. Plans include building a global correspondent network, offering content in multiple languages, and training new Emirati media talent. "The Authority will strengthen the Emirates News Agency (WAM), ensuring it remains the primary channel for official news," the decree states. The NMA’s goal is to boost the UAE’s media reputation at home and abroad by coordinating quick responses in media crises and promoting unified national views. This reform aligns with UAE’s broader vision, such as the Bridge Summit 2025, to become a media and content innovation hub. By uniting these functions, the UAE is set to improve its media governance and present a more consistent national voice globally.
