Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Five New Chief Justices for High Courts

On Thursday, December 18, 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium chaired by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant recommended five judges for appointment as Chief Justices of different High Courts. Justice Manoj Gupta from the Allahabad High Court is set to become Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court after the current Chief Justice retires on January 9, 2026. Justice Revati P. Mohit Dere of the Bombay High Court was suggested as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court after Justice Soumen Sen’s transfer. Justice Soumen Sen will move to the Kerala High Court as Chief Justice following a January 9 retirement there. Justice M.S. Sonak from the Bombay High Court is proposed for Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, replacing the retiring incumbent on January 8. Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque of the Kerala High Court is recommended for the Chief Justice role in the Sikkim High Court. Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo of the Orissa High Court is also recommended as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. These recommendations will bring fresh leadership to key judicial seats early next year.
