The Tamil Nadu government has issued a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Jallikattu events in 2026. These bull-taming events happen from January to May during the Pongal season. The SOP must be followed by district officials, organisers, participants, and all related departments. District Collectors will lead committees to monitor events. The Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services must provide guidelines, vet bulls, and prepare event layouts. "The Collector shall explain the rules and regulations and distribute copies of the SOP," the government stated. Only government-notified places can host Jallikattu. Any illegal event will face strict criminal action. Organisers must seek prior written or online permission stating event dates, location, and the number of bulls. Veterinary teams will check bulls, focusing on health and possible alcohol abuse. Bulls will receive medical care after the run in collection yards. The Health Department will check tamers for drug or alcohol consumption and provide first aid or hospital care if needed. Participants must be over 18 and register before joining. Safety includes double barricades at least eight feet high to stop bulls from jumping, and enough police to keep spectators away from bull yards. The main events will happen in six districts: Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Karur. Pudukottai will host the most events. This SOP aims to make Jallikattu safer while preserving this traditional sport during Pongal festivities.
