Amazon has banned a delivery worker who allegedly stole a Siamese mix cat called Piper from outside a California home while dropping a package. The theft happened on December 11 and was caught on a doorbell camera. After the video went viral on social media, old rumors about Haitian migrants resurfaced. The cat's owner, Diane Huff-Medina, said Piper is microchipped but was not wearing a collar at the time. An Amazon spokesman, Louie Tran, said, "This was a horrible act, and we’ve apologized to Ms Huff-Medina." He added, "The Amazon Flex delivery partner in question is no longer eligible to deliver to our customers. We’re in touch with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office to share relevant information with them and we’ll continue to support their investigation." Authorities have identified the 37-year-old delivery man, but his name has not been made public. He told police he thought Piper was a stray cat, which is why he took her. He also claimed that the cat got restless and jumped out of his truck and is no longer with him. Huff-Medina said it looked like the cat was resisting and the man forcefully took her. She did not realize Piper was missing until the next day when she checked her Ring doorbell footage. "It’s a helpless feeling because we watched her get taken, so I don’t know where she is or if she’s OK," she said. "I just want my cat back for myself and for my kids, especially. I have three little boys who love her. We want her back." Police confirmed charges will be filed against the delivery worker. Piper has not been returned yet.
